In 2021, the number of foreign tourist arrivals further dropped by 34.4 percent to slightly over 150,000 as compared to 2020. According to the tourism board, a total of 5,46,216 tourists have visited Nepal in the recent eleven months (January–November) of 2022.

Up to mid-March 2021, the number of registered travel agencies reached 3743, and trekking agencies had 2797. There were 142 star-rated hotels and 1293 tourist-rated hotels until mid-March 2021.

Development of the tourism industry in Nepal:

The Rana regime lasted 104 years until 1950 A.D. when road networks were built connecting some parts of Nepal to the Indian border. In the 1950s, foreigners started to visit Nepal for trade, climbing, and pilgrimage. Since eight mountains higher than 8000m were explored in 1950 A.D., that year is supposed to be the most important year in the history of tourism in Nepal. In particular, tourism in Nepal started after the first successful ascent of Mount Everest on May 29^th, 1953 by Tenzing Norgay and Sir Edmund Hillary. After the successful climb, Nepal started to be a new destination for foreigners. In the late 1960s and 1970s, hippies started to flow in Nepal. During those days, Nepal was famous for hippies as marijuana and hashish were within easy reach. Unfortunately, the Nepalese government banned the sale of marijuana and hashish in 1973, which became a turning point in the history of Nepal's tourism. Despite that, Nepal has developed as a hot spot for adventure seekers and cultural tourists.

In 1998, the Nepal Tourist Board was established to promote Nepal as an attractive tourist destination. The same year, Nepal celebrated Visit Nepal 98. From 1999, tourism started to decline because of the long Maoist insurgency. The historical peace treaty agreement between the Maoists and the government in 2006 was the biggest achievement, as a positive message about Nepal was transmitted to international tourists. The tourism year was celebrated in 2011 for the second time.

The devasting earthquake on April 25, 2005, shook the nation. About 600,000 structures in Kathmandu and other parts of the country were either damaged or destroyed, along with UNESCO heritage sites. Because of that, tourism broke off for some time.

History of Extreme Sports

The origin and popularity of adventure sports or extreme sports is from the last five decades when tourists and local people tried to climb the highest peak in the world known as Mt.Everest .The discovery of the world's highest peak was one of the crowning achievements of the work of surveyors, explorers and geographers. Edmund Hillary of New Zealand and Tenzing Norgay Sherpa of Nepal are the first confirmed climbers to reach the summit of Mount Everest on May 9, 1953. Everest is 29,035 feet above sea level. The two climbers spent only 15 minutes on the summit a few snaps of photos, did a celebratory hug and ate mint cake. As a symbol and memory of their coming to the top; Tenzing Norgay Sherpa left some sweets as a Buddhist offering and Edmund Hillary left a cross on top of the mountain. Until the 19th century, no one was aware that Mount Everest was the roof of the world.

All ski resorts are located 4,000 meters above sea level, where safety measures are given the highest priority and primary concern is the necessary measures to avoid altitude sickness through appropriate acclimatization at lower altitudes. Unfortunately, there are currently no ski resorts operating in Nepal, so skiing must be backcountry and exploratory.

Due to the high altitude, exceptional topography and huge amount of water flowing directly from the Himalayas and mountains, most of the rivers in Nepal provide excitement, thrill and unique adventure for canyoning along with pleasant natural jungles with scenic beauty, karst rocks and many cascading waterfalls along the river. NCA was founded in 2007, ideally dedicated to the discussion, development and communication of new ideas and thoughts between Nepalese canyoneers and international canyoneers from around the world. In addition, NCA has also collaborated with its international partners who have successfully been able to initiate about thirty canyons in Nepal and are currently operational for Canyoning activities.

TOURISM AFTER 1950

- 104 years the Rana Regime autocracy was ended in 1950.

- Slow development in Nepal began to take place.

- A road network was established connecting parts of Nepal with the Indian Border.

- On April 25, 2015, a magnitude 7.8 earthquake shook Nepal.

- The Mt. Everest climbing season was canceled.

- The historic site of the city, Bimsen Tower (Dharahara) with 61 meters high was collapsed.

- Also on May 12, a magnitude 7.3 earthquake aftershock occurs, resulting in the destruction of schools, health facilities, water and electricity, roads and bridges, and homes.

- All businesses including the tourism industry and markets was collapsed.

- The 10 billion rupees tourism industry was affected.

- The most important Hindu temple in the land of Pashupatinath was also partially damaged.
