Nepal vs Australia Salary Comparison 2026: Take-Home Pay After Tax, Rent and Super
A method-first guide to comparing take-home pay between Nepal and Australia as at late 2026. It sets out which sources count, how to label salary definitions and financial years, how SSF and Dashain affect Nepali net pay, and why the government benchmark row is currently missing. The worked example is presented as a fill-in template rather than sample figures, because untraceable numbers are the weakest part of any salary comparison.
Putting a Nepal salary next to an Australia salary looks like a subtraction problem. It isn't. The moment two figures sit side by side you have to answer three questions: where did each number come from, when was it true, and what got left out. What follows is a repeatable method for a take-home pay comparison between the two countries, written as at late September 2026. It names no winner, because the honest answer depends on which two jobs you pick and which numbers you can actually source.
The matched-occupation rule decides which rows exist
A row can only be built where both countries have a named, dated, linkable source for the same occupation, or for a comparable you are willing to justify out loud. No source pair, no row. That rule is the whole design. It means the table reads as method, not verdict, and it means some rows you expected to see simply will not be there.
Australia minimum wage: one decision, one confirmation page
Any minimum wage figure has to trace to the Fair Work Commission's Annual Wage Review decision for the current review cycle, with its decision date, and to the operative date it sets. In most recent years that operative date has been the first full pay period on or after 1 July, but read the decision rather than assuming it. In-force status is then confirmed against the Fair Work Ombudsman's current pay rates page, with the date you checked it. A news report from budget week is reportage only. It is never the rate source.
Superannuation: label which salary definition you use
The Superannuation Guarantee rate reached 12% on 1 July 2025 and has stayed there. An Australian salary figure can mean base pay, base plus SG (a package), or package plus additional employer contributions. The three give different take-home numbers. Every row must state on a single labelled line which definition it uses: base, package, or package-plus. That line tells the reader whether super is already inside the gross figure or sits on top of it. Employer SG contributions are not part of the employee's taxable income, so they should never be added to assessable earnings when you run the tax step.
Australian tax: pin everything to the financial year
Tax rates in Australia are not standing facts. They belong to a financial year. Every rate used here carries a label such as 2026-27, meaning 1 July 2026 to 30 June 2027, and comes from the ATO's Tax rates - Australian resident page for that year, cross-checked with the ATO's tax-withheld calculator. The resident rates have moved more than once in the last few years, so an earlier year's table must never be reused. The Medicare levy and the low income tax offset get their own lines rather than being folded silently into a net figure, because offsets phase out and a folded number hides that. If a rate cannot carry the financial-year label, it does not go in.
Nepal tax: the annual Finance Act, SSF, and Dashain allowance
Nepal's take-home pay needs the same dating discipline. The governing law is the Finance Act for the Nepali fiscal year, which takes effect from Shrawan 1 of that year and sets the annual slab thresholds and rates for individuals. Slab boundaries change from one Act to the next, and a married couple assessed jointly gets a higher first-slab threshold than a single individual. Read the current Act on the Inland Revenue Department site and record its name and the date you read it. Do not carry last year's slabs forward, and do not quote a slab table without saying which fiscal year it belongs to.
Social Security Fund contributions are deducted from salary before tax, so they reduce both the tax bill and the cash the employee actually receives. The contribution is calculated on basic salary plus grade, at the employee and employer shares published by the Fund; confirm the current shares on the SSF's own site rather than from a third-party summary. The Dashain allowance, typically one month's basic, is taxable, and it is often paid as a lump sum. State clearly whether the gross figure in a row includes it or treats it separately, because the annual total differs.
Nepal government pay: why the benchmark row is missing
The natural Nepal-side benchmark is the prevailing Nepal Government civil-service pay scale from the National Pay Commission and Ministry of Finance pay-scale notification, with its Nepali fiscal-year effective date. When we checked the Ministry of Finance and National Pay Commission websites in September 2026, a current, dated notification covering the running fiscal year could not be located. So the entry-level government benchmark row is dropped. The flag on the table reads: Nepal benchmark: not used, see method note.
Do not quietly substitute a private-sector minimum wage for that row. The last widely reported Nepal minimum wage figure was NPR 17,300 per month, effective Shrawan 2080 (July 2023), from the Ministry of Labour, Employment and Social Security. That is a historical figure and it stays labelled as one. It is not the current rate unless a newer dated notification says so.
Where a monthly government figure is used, the fortnightly presentation people search for is plain arithmetic, shown on the page: monthly scale x 12 / 26. State whether the figure is basic scale alone or includes dearness and grade allowances, because the two produce very different numbers. In Nepal salaries are paid monthly, so the fortnightly line is a presentation device, not a payslip reality, and it should say so.
Nurse rows, and Nepali nurses working abroad
For the Australian side of a nurse row, use either the Fair Work Ombudsman's Nurses Award 2020 pay rates page, recording the date you checked it, or a dated state health enterprise agreement. For Nepal nurse pay, only a dated named source counts, such as a specific merojob or Jobs Dynamics salary report with its publication date, or a published hospital pay scale. Be careful here: nursing councils regulate registration and standards, not hospital pay scales, so a council circular is not a pay source. The phrase about Nepali nurses' salaries abroad is served by destination-country data instead, for example NHS Employers pay scales with the pay year and the date checked.
Software developers, and labelling estimates as estimates
For Australian software developer earnings, the ABS Employee Earnings and Hours release (Cat. 6306.0) is the measured option, cited with its release date and reference period. That survey runs roughly every two years, so the latest release is usually well behind the current quarter and the page should say so. As a more frequent measured fallback, cite ABS Average Weekly Earnings (Cat. 6302.0) with its reference period and release date. A dated Hays or SEEK salary guide can be used too, but it must be labelled an estimate, never a measured median. The Nepal side needs a dated merojob or equivalent report. If only one side has a source, the row is dropped.
Cost of living: rent, food, transport, utilities
Australian rents come from the ABS Consumer Price Index (Cat. 6401.0), Rents series, using the latest quarter available and stating that quarter and its release date. Food and non-alcoholic beverages, transport, and utilities come from the same release, from the relevant expenditure groups. Nepal rents come from the Nepal CBS or Nepal Rastra Bank CPI rent component for Kathmandu, with its release month and date. Food and transport use the corresponding CBS subgroups. Numbeo can appear as clearly labelled crowd-sourced illustration, never as the sole basis for a figure. Print the comparison window on the page so nobody compares two different periods by accident. Both series are index numbers: turning them into a weekly rent in dollars or rupees means applying the index to a dated rent level, and that base level needs its own source and date.
Currency and the remittance angle
Cross-currency lines are deleted unless the NPR to AUD rate is stated with its source, either Nepal Rastra Bank or a named FX provider, and the date of that rate. Add one line on volatility rather than pretending the rate is fixed. On remittances, Nepal Rastra Bank statistics cover the Nepal-side totals well and are updated regularly. Australia-specific bilateral figures are scarce, so use the World Bank bilateral remittance matrix with its edition and reference year, or leave the bilateral number out altogether rather than estimating it.
The worked example, as a template
No sample figures are printed here. A plausible-looking net pay number that cannot be traced is worse than a blank line, and it is the part of any salary comparison readers are most likely to quote back at you. What follows is the order of operations. Fill each line from a dated source, or drop the row.
Australia (state the financial year and the date each source was checked):
- Gross annual package, with the salary definition labelled (base, package, or package-plus) and its source
- Base salary = package divided by one plus the SG rate, if the package includes super
- Superannuation = base multiplied by the SG rate
- Taxable income = base salary (employer super is not the employee's assessable income)
- Income tax = ATO resident rates for that financial year, shown as a band-by-band calculation
- Medicare levy and any offsets, each on its own line, with the offset phase-out threshold stated
- Net annual = taxable income minus tax minus levy plus offsets
- Fortnightly take-home = net annual divided by 26
- Fortnightly rent and other costs from the dated index, converted to the same fortnightly basis
- Residual = fortnightly take-home minus fortnightly costs
Nepal (state the fiscal year, the Finance Act, and the date checked):
- Gross monthly, stating whether the figure is basic alone or basic plus grade and dearness, and whether Dashain is inside the figure or separate
- Annual gross = monthly multiplied by 12, or by 13 where a separate Dashain month is included
- SSF employee contribution = the published employee share, applied to basic plus grade
- Taxable income = annual gross minus the SSF contribution
- Tax = the Finance Act slabs applied band by band, with the slab each band falls into named
- Net annual = annual gross minus the SSF contribution minus tax. The SSF money is deducted twice over in the sense that it leaves take-home as well as reducing tax, and any template that subtracts it for tax but not from cash is simply wrong
- Fortnightly take-home = net annual multiplied by 12 and divided by 26, labelled as a presentation figure
- Fortnightly rent and other costs from the dated CPI component, on the same basis
- Residual = fortnightly take-home minus fortnightly costs
Currency line: the rate, its source, and the date. One sentence on recent movement.
The source checklist
- Fair Work Commission Annual Wage Review decision, with operative date, plus Fair Work Ombudsman pay rates page and the date checked
- ATO Tax rates - Australian resident, for the current financial year, plus the ATO tax-withheld calculator
- Superannuation Guarantee rate of 12%, in place since 1 July 2025
- ABS Consumer Price Index (Cat. 6401.0), rents, food, transport and utilities series, latest quarter, with release date
- ABS Average Weekly Earnings (Cat. 6302.0) and Employee Earnings and Hours (Cat. 6306.0), each with reference period and release date
- Nepal CBS or Nepal Rastra Bank CPI components for Kathmandu, with release month
- Australia nurse pay: Fair Work Ombudsman Nurses Award 2020 pay rates page, or a dated state enterprise agreement, with the date checked
- Nepal nurse pay: a dated merojob, Jobs Dynamics or comparable report, or a published hospital pay scale
- Nepali nurses abroad: destination-country pay scales, with the pay year stated
- Software: ABS releases as above, or a salary guide explicitly marked as an estimate, plus a dated Nepal-side report
- Nepal Government pay scale: National Pay Commission or Ministry of Finance notification, checked September 2026 and not located
- Nepal tax: the Finance Act for the current fiscal year, read on the Inland Revenue Department site, with the date read
- NPR to AUD rate, with source and date
- Nepal Rastra Bank remittance statistics, and the World Bank bilateral remittance matrix with its edition and reference year if a bilateral figure is used
Anyone can run this. That is the point. A salary comparison for Nepali workers is only as trustworthy as its weakest citation, and a method that shows its sources and its gaps will outlast any list of rounded-up numbers.
