Most Nepali travellers heading to Dubai or the other emirates begin by asking which embassy counter to visit in Kathmandu. That is the wrong door. A UAE tourist or visit visa is an electronic entry permit issued by the UAE immigration authorities, and for a Nepali passport holder the file normally moves through a UAE-based sponsor, a licensed travel agency, or an airline or hotel package, not through a visa window in Kathmandu.

What follows reflects how the official channels were structured when this was prepared on 4 October 2026. Fees, fine schedules and extension conditions are the parts that change most often, and they are the parts you should always read at source before paying anyone.

Do Nepali citizens need a visa for the UAE?

Yes. Nepal is not on the UAE visa-on-arrival or visa-waiver lists, so a Nepali passport holder needs a visa issued before travel. The category depends on purpose: tourism, visiting family or friends, business meetings, transit, or employment. Those categories are not interchangeable, and a visit visa does not turn into permission to work.

Where the application actually goes

For Dubai, visa files are handled through the General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs (GDRFA). For the other emirates and for federal channels, the Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Ports Security authority (ICP) is the body to check. An applicant sitting in Kathmandu generally cannot submit to either directly. The sponsor or the agency holding the file submits it, pays the fee, and receives the approved e-visa, which is then sent to you as a PDF.

The practical rule: verify on gdrfad.gov.ae or icp.gov.ae, or through the sponsor's own written checklist, rather than relying on a phone call from a middleman.

Routes that can be documented

  • A UAE-based sponsor. Usually a resident with an Emirates ID, a company with a trade licence, a hotel holding your booking, or in some cases an airline.
  • A licensed travel agency in the UAE, or a Kathmandu agency acting as a front-end for one.
  • An airline or hotel package, where the visa is bundled into a ticket or stay.

The sponsor's job is to upload your documents and pay the immigration fee. What you hand over typically includes a passport copy, a photograph, travel dates, and sometimes a return ticket or hotel confirmation. A Kathmandu agency is a middleman: useful for paperwork, but not an issuing authority, and not able to approve anything on its own.

Documents, and which ones are actually legal requirements

Passport validity, photograph specifications, sponsor identity documents, financial or travel proof, a return ticket and accommodation details are all asked for. Most of these are sponsor or agency requirements rather than rules written into immigration law, and the two should not be confused. Passport validity is the one worth treating strictly, since it is checked against the authority's published conditions. Photographs are normally white background and recent. Sponsors routinely ask for bank statements or a confirmed booking, but that is their risk assessment, not a statute.

Understanding UAE visa fees in bands

Four separate costs exist and they get mixed up constantly.

  • The immigration fee set by GDRFA or ICP, which depends on category and duration.
  • The sponsor or agency service charge, which is commercial and varies widely.
  • An airline or hotel package price, where the visa is bundled and refundability depends on the package terms.
  • Nepal-side costs: agent commission in Kathmandu, bank or card conversion charges, courier fees.

No dirham or rupee figures are quoted here. The authoritative amount sits on the immigration authority's own fee page, and second-hand numbers are how people end up overcharged. Note also that fees are set in AED while you may pay in rupees, so the exchange rate on the day matters.

Overstay and extension

Overstaying a UAE visa is an immigration violation and penalties are set out in the GDRFA or ICP schedule. Per-day amounts, grace periods and any entry bans should be read from that schedule directly, not from an agent's verbal assurance that it can be settled at the airport. Extensions are not automatic, and whether one is available for your category should be confirmed with the issuing authority before your visa expires. Treat any promise of a guaranteed extension as unverified.

A visit visa is not a work visa

This is the one warning worth repeating. UAE immigration rules do not permit employment on a visit or tourist visa. Nepali citizens taking up a job abroad are also required by Nepal's foreign employment law to go through the Department of Foreign Employment and hold a labour permit, with the Ministry of Labour, Employment and Social Security as the policy authority. Anyone offering to send you to the Gulf on a visit visa and promising work on arrival is describing something that legal rules on both sides do not allow.

Foreign exchange on the Nepal side

Nepali travellers buy foreign currency through authorised dealers under Nepal Rastra Bank rules. NRB issues circulars and notices that set and revise travel facilities, and those change. Confirm the applicable facility and any limit with your bank or authorised dealer, and check nrb.org.np on the day rather than relying on a figure from a forum post.

Dubai or Sharjah?

UAE visit visas sit inside a federal framework, but files may be processed through different immigration authorities or sponsors. There is no reliable basis for saying one emirate is easier, cheaper or faster for a Nepali applicant, and anyone claiming otherwise should be able to show you the source. What changes your experience is the sponsor you use and the visa category, not the emirate's name on the stamp.

Is the UAE embassy in Kathmandu the place to file?

The UAE mission in Kathmandu carries out the ordinary work of a diplomatic mission. It is not the counter where a tourist visa application is handed over. Tourist visas are electronic and move through the immigration authorities. If a website tells you to queue at an embassy with a visit visa file, check the mission's own page before acting on it.

Check these before you pay

GDRFA Dubai (gdrfad.gov.ae) and ICP (icp.gov.ae) for categories, fees, extensions and overstay schedules. UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs for mission services. Nepal Department of Immigration for exit requirements. Nepal Rastra Bank for travel foreign exchange. Ministry of Labour, Employment and Social Security and the Department of Foreign Employment for anything involving work abroad.

Verification notes for this article: the channel structure above was written on 4 October 2026. Fee amounts, penalty schedules and extension conditions were deliberately left out rather than quoted second-hand, because they are administrative figures that shift and should be read from the authority's own page on the day you apply.
