Search for a 200-hour yoga teacher training in Nepal and you will get a long list of schools, a lot of beautiful photography, and a set of claims that are hard to compare against one another. This guide is about the comparison part: what those 200 hours actually cover, how to read a school's quote line by line, what an RYT 200 registration does and does not do for you, and what you should have in writing before any deposit leaves your account.

Some schools publish their fees openly, others ask you to email. Either way, the number you are quoted only means something once you know what sits inside it, so start there rather than with the price.

What the 200 hours actually cover

The 200-hour figure is a training standard, not a timetable. Courses generally divide into asana technique, teaching methodology, anatomy and physiology, philosophy and ethics, and supervised practice teaching. Where schools differ enormously is in how much of the total is real contact time with a teacher and how much is self-study, reading or written assignments you do on your own.

So before you compare anything else, ask for the daily schedule and the split between led classes and independent work. A course that runs six days a week from 6am to 6pm and one that runs five mornings a week can both advertise 200 hours honestly. They are not the same few weeks. Ask too who leads the course day to day, since a well-known teacher on the homepage may not be the person in the room.

How to read a school's quote

A headline price can mean tuition only, or tuition plus a shared room and three meals a day. Those two numbers can look similar and be thousands of rupees apart in practice. Ask for a written quote that lists each item separately:

  • Is the room single or shared, and what does an upgrade cost per night?
  • Are all meals included every day, including days off, and how are dietary needs handled?
  • Are the manual, course materials and certification fee inside the price, or added later?
  • How many students per teacher, and what is the maximum group size?
  • What is the written cancellation and refund policy if you fall ill mid-course?
  • Is there any charge for airport pickup, laundry, or use of the shala outside class hours?

Get the answers in writing from an official school email address, not over a chat app. A school that will not put inclusions and refund terms in writing is telling you something useful.

Where trainings run

Most sit in two areas. Kathmandu and the surrounding valley, including Bhaktapur, suits people who want a city base, short trips to temples and easy access to flights and hospitals. Pokhara is slower and greener, with lakeside settings and mountain views, and a course there usually means a quieter few weeks with less to walk to.

Both get hot and wet through the monsoon months and cool in winter, and the accommodation styles differ. A Pokhara course and a Kathmandu course at the same headline figure are not automatically the same product, so weigh what you want out of the weeks either side of class, not just the class itself.

Certification: what RYT 200 does and does not do

RYT 200 and Registered Yoga School, or RYS, are marks of Yoga Alliance. This article is not affiliated with or endorsed by Yoga Alliance, and a badge on a school's homepage proves nothing on its own. Yoga Alliance runs a public directory at yogaalliance.org, where you can look schools up.

The directory is built around school names and locations rather than ID numbers, so the practical move is the reverse of what you might expect. Search for the school by name and location, find its listing, then check that the registration ID shown on that listing matches the ID the school gave you. Look at the status shown and at any renewal or expiry date on the listing. Schools drop off when they stop renewing, so a screenshot from two years ago proves nothing about today.

What RYT 200 gives you: a recognised record that you completed a training of a defined length, a directory listing for your own registration, and the credential some studios, insurers and employers ask for when hiring or covering teachers. What it does not give you: a guarantee of work, an income, or automatic insurance acceptance. If a school advertises job placement or earnings figures, treat that as a reason to slow down rather than book.

Dates: what is left in 2026 and what is open for 2027

Training calendars in Nepal are less uniform than the brochures suggest. Plenty of Kathmandu and Pokhara schools run 200-hour courses roughly monthly or at least several times a year, while others hold two or three intakes in spring, around March to May, and autumn, around October to November. It depends heavily on the school, so ask rather than assume.

As this is written in early October 2026, some operators will still have late-2026 dates open, while others will have closed their books and be working on next year. The useful questions now are these: which 2027 months are confirmed and which are provisional, what the minimum number of students is, what happens if an intake is under-enrolled, and how much notice the school gives you if it moves a date. Small courses sometimes get merged into another group or pushed back, so ask directly how that is handled.

Also ask when the school expects to publish its full 2027 calendar. Some post a year ahead, others only a few months before each course. If flights are involved, do not book them until the school has confirmed in writing that the intake is running.

Entry paperwork

Visa rules depend on your nationality and on what you will be doing in Nepal. A tourist visa covers sightseeing and short courses in most cases, but study and any paid activity may fall outside that category, and a course that leads to teaching could be treated differently from a holiday. Do not take a summary from a blog, including this one, as your answer.

Go to Nepal's Department of Immigration at nepalimmigration.gov.np and read the visa category pages and the fee schedule in force on the day you apply. Then confirm with the Nepali embassy or consulate that handles your country. Save the page you read, because schedules change, and print or screenshot anything you relied on.

Health and altitude before you go

Kathmandu sits at roughly 1,400 metres and Pokhara at around 800, both far below trekking altitude, though people arriving straight from sea level can still notice the difference for a day or two. Drink more water than you think you need. Be cautious with untreated water and ice, and expect your stomach to take a few days to adjust to a new diet.

Vaccinations and any preventive medication are a conversation between you, a travel clinic and your insurer. No yoga school or course package covers that ground, and nobody at a retreat can make that call for you. If you have an existing health condition, get advice before you pay a deposit, not after.

Before you book

Three things to hold in hand: a written quote itemising tuition, room, meals, materials and the certification fee; the school's Yoga Alliance registration ID matched against its directory listing on the day you check; and the correct visa route confirmed from the immigration department's own pages.

If any one of those is missing, wait. There is no shortage of courses, and the one that answers your questions properly before taking your money is usually the one that handles problems properly afterwards too.

Written in October 2026. No fee figures appear in this edition. Where a school date or price is quoted in a future update, it will carry the date it was retrieved. This site has no commercial arrangement with any school named in this article, and no ordering here is determined by payment. If that ever changes, it will be stated plainly at the point of naming.
